Your music is an asset, not a flyer

A finished track can earn for decades through multiple, overlapping royalty streams. The mistake most producers make is treating releases purely as promotion and never registering the rights that actually pay. Understanding the difference between the recording and the song is the key that unlocks the money.

The two copyrights in every track

Streaming a song pays out on both sides — recording royalties (via your distributor/label) and publishing royalties (via your PRO and a mechanical-rights body). If you only set up distribution and skip the PRO, you are leaving the publishing half on the table.

Distribution and streaming

To get on Spotify, Apple Music and Beatport you either sign to a label or use a distributor (DistroKid, TuneCore, Amuse, LANDR, Symphonic). Distributors take your master, place it on every platform, and pay you the recording royalties — typically for a flat annual fee or a small cut. Streaming pays roughly $0.003-0.005 per stream, so distribution income is a long-tail, volume game: a back catalogue of 30 tracks earning small amounts continuously beats one track you hope goes viral.

PROs and publishing

A Performing Rights Organization (ASCAP, BMI in the US; PRS in the UK; GEMA, SACEM, SOCAN and others worldwide) collects performance royalties — money owed when your song is played on radio, in clubs, on TV, or streamed. Register as both a writer and, ideally, a publisher, and register every track you write. This is free or cheap money that simply does not arrive if you never sign up. For the mechanical/streaming portion of publishing, use a publishing admin (Songtrust, your distributor's publishing add-on) to sweep up the global royalties your PRO alone misses.

Split sheets before you collaborate. Before you release anything you made with someone else, agree the ownership split in writing — who owns what percentage of the master and the composition. Sorting this after a track does well is where friendships and money both die.

Sync licensing — the big checks

Sync is licensing your music to picture: TV shows, films, ads, trailers, games, YouTube creators. A single placement can pay from a few hundred dollars for a small show to five or six figures for a national ad, and it pays on both the master and the composition. To pursue sync: keep clean stems and instrumental versions of every track, own (or clearly control) all the rights, and pitch to sync agencies and music-licensing libraries. Instrumentals and "cleared" tracks with no uncleared samples are far more licensable, which is one more reason to keep your sample usage legitimate.

Ghost production

Ghost production is making finished tracks that another artist releases under their name, for a flat fee and usually no public credit. It is common, legal when contracted properly, and a real income source for skilled producers — typical fees run $300-$5,000 per track depending on the buyer and quality. Two cautions: get a contract that spells out exactly what rights you are selling (full buyout vs. royalty split), and understand the trade-off — a buyout pays now but you give up the catalogue value and the credit that could build your own name. Many producers use ghost work to fund their own artist project rather than as a forever career.

Putting it together

The professional setup for any release: distribute the master, register the composition with your PRO and a publishing admin, keep stems and an instrumental for sync, and document all splits. Do this on every track and your catalogue becomes a compounding asset that earns long after the release-week hype is gone.
